SHARP
Daily mental multitasking and our constant state of busyness can create a chronic level of stress on our brain, causing us to be unfocused, distracted and less productive. This chronic level of stress on our brain is so toxic, that experts believe more than 75% of medical visits are stress related. Honestly, most of us are too busy to notice, and will not realize the devastating impact of stress on our lives until it takes a serious toll on our health, happiness, or performance. For most of our history, scientists believe that this was simply how our brain worked, that we’re hardwired to respond to our circumstances in a specific way, and our only solution was to try to change the amount of mental stress we experience.
While cognitive decline is an inevitable part of the aging process, studies show that we can prevent, or at least postpone, its development through intervention. Our brain is radically adaptable if we train it appropriately – like we do our bodies. The “fitter” our brain is, the more energy efficient it becomes, and the easier it is to do important mental tasks such as focusing attention and being creative.
Update and revised, this interactive edition of SHARP, released January 13, 2012, includes access to real world training exercises and short video discussions on nutrition, fitness, and performance psychology. Guided audio tracks assist readers in practicing concepts of mindfulness in order to relax, rebalance, and recharge their brain for improved health, happiness, and performance. Dr. Hanna discusses how common demands on your time and energy impact your mental capacity, and may speed up the rate of cognitive decline when left unmanaged.
